Congratulations Obama

A momentous night for American politics and one that many believe confirms Martin Luther King’s dream and proves America has changed for good in the 21st century.

According to CNN, Obama wins with a 5% majority of the popular vote but through the Electoral College system picks up Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia and Florida with 3 states still to go.

Some of those sensitive ballot measures have also yet to be decided but it will certainly be interesting to watch the impact on the world of America’s decision to look for change in the coming years.

Wyoming saddles up to McCain

The BBC goes to a Wyoming rodeo and finds no love for the Democrats….

The cowboy is ingrained in the DNA of Wyoming… From the flat plains in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west, the essence of the cowboy - individual, traditional and patriotic - defines the state and hence its politics.

In at number one this week: Abraham Lincoln for “the coolest-sounding presidential name of all time”.

Jokes aside, it’s a very good intro from the Times to US political history for those watching the Obama / McCain fight from the wings.

Stanley Stewart in the Times must have rolled into Tombstone on Sunday for the 127th anniversary shoot-out but is so tired of election fever he compares the Earp vs. Clanton gunfight with a Republican vs. Democrat brawl!

A good read for those wanting to try a little dude ranching as he moseys on down to the Price Canyon Ranch for some riding in the canyons:

After three days of riding across God’s own country, and an evening of Jesse’s fiddle, I had deserted. I didn’t care who was up and who was down. The poll figures meant nothing to me. I was a free man again.

Another story in the same paper though made me think it might be worth setting up a dude ranch of sorts in the UK, especially now it seems many horse owners in the UK are struggling to keep their own fed and stabled:

Horses, seen as luxury accessories of the wealthy, are the latest victims of the credit crunch, with a growing number being abandoned because their owners cannot afford feed and livery bills

Peter Brookes’ regular Nature Notes cartoon in The Times today compares the Arizona Senator to a ‘fast disappearing species’:
